Metropolitan Link Program

Senior Squads – 16 to 18 years olds
Each year Netball NSW holds trials to select players from the Sydney Metropolitan Area to form three development squads. The Metropolitan Link Program forms an important step in the Player Development Pathway and looks to focus on improving and developing player skills.

Selections are held between September – January to select squad members to enter the Metropolitan Link Program – Senior Squads. The program generally runs from February through to October on an annual basis. Players aged between 16 and 18 years are eligible to trial for the Metropolitan Link Program – Senior Squads. Players must have turned 16 years of age in the year of competition, and must not be over the age of 18 years in the year of competition.

Players who are selected into the Metropolitan Link Program, along with training and development, may also be involved in two round robin competitions, NIB Games held in July each year and also the Academy Games held in October.

The goals of the Metropolitan Link Program are:
  • To improve basic skills of all participants
  • To provide some introductory education on Goal setting, Time Management, Recovery and Nutrition to enhance on-court performance.
  • To introduce players to field testing to enable more specific training programs and to provide Netball NSW with a database of norms and individual performances.
  • To commence a tracking system of individual athletes by coaches reports and skills testing.
  • To identify talented players for further pathways.

Players selected into the program may participate in:

  • Up to 12 scheduled training sessions.
  • Pre-and post-season fitness testing.
  • Inter-academy based competitions (such as NIB Games and the Academy Challenge).
  • Off-court educational sessions.

Selection Criteria
The criteria for selection into the Metropolitan Link Program is based on where a particular player is registered at the time of selection. Should a player be selected into a NSW State Team or NSWIS, then that player will not be eligible for the Metropolitan Link Program. Players may not play for both a Metropolitan Squad and an Academy Squad.

All players based in the Metropolitan Associations are eligible to be selected into the Metropolitan Link Program

A player levy is charged to all members of the program to assist in covering costs associated with the program.

15 yrs Metropolitan Link Program
Along with the senior squad the Metropolitan Link Program has a fifteen-years component. The 15 years program selections are being held on the 13 August 2010 at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre starting at 6:30pm. Successfully selected squad members will undertake six hours of training and compete in the 15 years Development Weekend which is held on the 16-17 October 2010 at the Anne Clark Netball Centre in Sydney.

The purpose of the Metropolitan Link 15 years program is to:

  • Provide a training environment that allows eligible athletes to access quality services and programs
  • Implement talent identification programs to assist in identifying talented athletes in the 15 years age category.
  • Provide a selection pathway for the 15-year-old athletes within the region towards the Talented Athlete Program final selection phase.
  • Increase the number of opportunities for selectors to view the 15 years age group for Talented Athlete Program selection and State 17/U trials.
  • Provide coach and umpire education and development opportunities to assist in the development of the region’s coaches and umpires.

At the 15 Years Development Weekend, Academy and Metropolitan squad members play in a two-day tournament. Netball NSW selectors view each player and from the weekend a Talented Athlete Program squad of 40 athletes is selected to attend the Talented Athlete Program Camp (29-31 October 2010).

15 Years Metropolitan Link Program Trials
Trials for the 2010 15 Years Metropolitan Link Program are now open. Players turning 15 (born in 1995) are encouraged to complete a nomination form and attend the trial on the 13 August 2010 at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre.
