Academy Programs
The Northern Inland Academy of Sport will hold trials for Netballers who have or are turning 15 in 2010. The trials involve existing 15 years NIAS athletes and is open to all Associations within the region. We encourage athletes to trial as the Sydney development camp is very beneficial. At the trial day a form is to be filled out by the athlete to confirm trialling for the 15’s development Squad. On that form there will be an option to tick if the athletes would like to be considered for the NIAS Netball squad in 2011. Trials for this squad will not be until October.
The Trials
Where: Campbell Hall, Sport UNE, Armidale
When: 5th September 2010
Time: to be confirmed, 10am-3pm.
Please advise NIAS of names and numbers of trialling girls from each association by the 20th August or contact NIAS for additional information nias@nias.org.au
NORTHERN INLAND STATE LEAGUE 2010
Reversing the result of the 2009 Grand Final, Narrabri toppled Inverell, 42-38, to claim the Division 1 title at the 2010 Northern Inland State League Finals in Inverell on Sunday.
Inverell were the favourites to take out the Division 1 title after finishing on top of the ladder at the conclusion of Round 3 and having the home court advantage for the finals day, but after losing to Inverell in the 2009 Grand Final, Narrabri were determined to finish on top in 2010.
Both teams had comfortable victories in the knockout round to advance to the decider; Inverell defeated Tamworth 50-35 and Narrabri eclipsed Armidale 38-29.
The Grand Final was a see-sawing match as Narrabri took the lead by one goal at halftime before Inverell forged ahead by six goals at three-quarter time. It all came down to the final quarter as Narrabri surged, outscoring Inverell 17-7 in the term to win by four goals.
In Division 2 Tamworth came into the finals on top of the ladder with Inverell, Narrabri and Armidale all close behind. Inverell ousted Armidale 52-28 whilst Tamworth defeated Narrabri 38-24 in the knockout finals to also make the Division 2 Grand Final a rematch of 2009. It was a case of history repeating as Inverell overpowered Tamworth thanks to 16-4 third quarter, to take the victory 46-25.
Thanks to all the players, umpires, coaches, managers, PCP, host Associations and volunteers who made the 2010 Northern Inland State League a huge success.
A Northern Inland Planning Meeting will be held on Sunday 5th September at Inverell where State League for 2011 will be discussed. For more information email Alex Sheiles, Regional Coordinator at asheiles@netballnsw.com

UMPIRING UPDATE
“It was decided at last year’s UMEC meeting to make the Introductory Officiating General Principles online course compulsory for all Level 1 umpire course participants so that the ASC manuals did not need to be purchased.
Netball Australia has received feedback that the Introductory Officiating General Principles online course is too complex and demanding for young participants – which make up a large percentage of participants in this course.
Netball Australia advises that the Introductory Officiating General Principles online course is no longer a requirement for the Level 1 Umpire Course. Those participants that have already completed the Level 1 course but not the online course may be awarded with the course. Future participants are not required to complete the online course nor purchase the ASC manual.”
The National Umpire Strategic Committee will review whether the online course should be included in the accreditation framework when they meet later this year.
2010 Rookie Camp – 13th and 14th November 2010
The Rookies Camp is designed for umpires who have recently obtained their National C Badge. This Camp is a gentle introduction to the camp system and provides participants with the opportunity to meet other newly badged umpires. Participants are involved in sessions relating to rules, drills, preparing umpires for their first steps into officiating State League, and the pathways available to umpires. For further information please contact Jan Simpson, Umpire Education Officer at jsimpson@netballnsw.comor 9951 5000 or Alex Sheiles on asheiles@netballnsw.comor 6761 3724.
