Reminiscent of the 2010 Grand Final, the 17/U NSW team narrowly missed out on the national title, succumbing to reigning champions Victoria 33-31 in the decider at the 2011 National Netball Championship today.
Despite not getting the title they desired, the NSW team can take heart from the great improvement they showed from Round 4 when they were defeated by VIC by 11 goals.
It was a tremendous game from both teams, with neither giving any ground.
In a tense first quarter NSW established a narrow lead at the first break, 9-7.
NSW started to find their way around the VIC defensive zone in the second quarter but VIC were able to fight back, sneaking ahead by three goals at halftime, 18-15.
Kaitlyn Bryce provided great speed in the goal third for NSW but they were unable to make any inroads to the margin in the third quarter, still trailing by three at the final break, 26-23.
It was goal for goal in the final quarter and both teams had chances to win the game but when VIC forced a NSW turnover in the dying stages they sealed the victory.
