The NSW 21/U State Team have survived a tough game in the opening round at the 21/U National Netball Championships with a 49-42 come-from-behind victory over Western Australia on Wednesday morning.
With a limited preparation together due to a number of players with AIS and Australian commitments, the NSW team made a slow start to the game but stayed in touch with WA before their combinations started gel and they overran the opposition in the second half.
Facing an 18-26 deficit at halftime the second half was all NSW as they closed the gap on WA to three goals at the final break, 31-34. In the final quarter NSW ran over the top of WA to secure the victory in their opening game of the tournament.
NSW Coach Maria Lynch was pleased that the team was able to make a comeback.
“Our connections just weren’t there at the start but as the game went on we got more belief in ourselves and it turned around enormously,” Lynch said.
“It was our first 60 minutes of netball together so our aim was to build each quarter and each game, we certainly did that. Even though we were down we were in touch with the game and knew we were in with a chance.
“To turn around that number of goals was testament to the girls’ passion to get out there, up the intensity and finish things off.”
For their next game the team will lineup against Queensland at 6.00pm tonight (Wednesday).
