Six NSW netballers have been rewarded for their performances during the 2010 DealsDirect.com.au National Netball Championships with selection in the Australia 19U Squad.
Finishing runners-up after being defeated by Queensland by three goals in the Grand Final 27-24, Nicola Gray, Sophie Metcalfe (Manly-Warringah), Samantha Poolman (Newcastle), Verity Simmons (Grafton), Gabi Simpson (Randwick) and Melissa Tallent (Sutherland Shire) were selected in the squad of 20.
The Australian 19U Squad will attend a camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in July where they will come under the watchful eye of Australian Diamonds Coach Norma Plummer as well as other High Performance coaches from around the country.
Whilst disappointed to fall short of winning their third consecutive National Netball Championship title, NSW 19U Coach Moira Gaha was pleased with the selection of six players in the squad.
“I think it’s very well deserved for all six players. They’ve all worked very hard to improve their skills and their play and to have six of them chosen for that squad is very exciting for netball in NSW,” Gaha said.
The NSW 19U Team entered the National Netball Championship looking to win their third consecutive title.
After winning through to the Grand Final with a victory over South Australia, NSW was met with a determined Queensland team that turned into the giant killers of the competition after finishing the rounds in fourth place.
Trailing by six goals heading into the final quarter, NSW drew to within a whisker, but Queensland stood up to the pressure, denying NSW a third consecutive title and claiming their first in nine years, 27-24.
Gaha, although disappointed with the loss was full of praise for her team.
“It was a very tight game. We had a late rally in the last quarter but we didn’t make that rally soon enough. We fought back as we did in a number of our games which showed the tremendous fighting spirit and determination within the team,” Gaha said.
